My little princess is coming along extremely well. She is already up to 8 lbs 3 oz and her physical therapy sessions are "outstanding." They have been absolutely zero signs of negative activity with any parts of her body. All I can say is that it is a miracle that all of this has turned out so well. Of course, we aren't completely out of the woods yet, but we are still optimistic from what we are seeing today.

She is my little cartoon too. She is full of joy and her smiles come in abundance these days. Her favorite thing to do is sit back in her daddy's lap and watch the Reds get pounded while her mom comes in laughing at us.

My wife's first day back to work is today. So we will see how that goes after almost 6 months off and never having to be away from Kaydence for more than an hour at a time. So far, she is handling it pretty well. Just a few more hours to go...

Perhaps I will put up some videos of her as she goes through her stages of growth. Until next time, take care everyone!

Entry Title: Click For God First

Published On: 03-10-2008 03:36 AM

I just got home from a buddy's house. Jesus is on my mind as I came home listening to a Shane and Shane CD. The tune "Lord, I want it all" is playing through my head and I have every intent on spending some time with that. Making that song as more than just a pretty tune, but a life definition.

It is Christmas Eve, and I am supposed to be admiring the birth of our savior. But when I came home tonight, I sat at my computer desk. I looked at the desktop, mouse in my hand ready to click...

Baseball? What happened to wanting it all? What happened to yearning for God's will? Is God in this? Or have I chosen baseball over God?

This could just be an isolated incident. But think about this for a second. When you sit at your computer, do you find God in the site you frequently visit first? Does this tell you where your focus truly is? How many of us sit at the computer to gain information or fulfillment in something, yet do not go to God first?

We need to make this an issue. If we are Christians, we need to cherish God more than what has taken his place. God dances over us and embraces us when we are absolutely in love with him.

I want that glory and must choose baseball or Christ. It seems easy to just choose the true God. But I must ask God to help me in my quest. I must gain a deeper thirst for him and have baseball become an afterthought. A hobby. God is and should be treated as someone much greater than a hobby.

Its time to click for God first. Search for what he is doing in the world and join him. Find his will for you on the internet. Where can you join in?

Becoming,
David

My new favorite actor. I have been meaning to mention it for a while now, but never got around to it. If any of you have not seen his last three movies, you must. Click and Reign Over Me put him on top of the map, while I Now Pronounce You Chuck And Larry brought him back to the funny actor we know. Now, there are plenty of other actors with a lot of range, but Adam Sandler has always had a nact to make everyone laugh. He is one of the best comedic performers the world has ever known. Click brings out the funny as always, but it also has a very emotional touch to it. For the first time, you see Adam Sandler play a part that really touches you. Some of the best movies in the world are ones that have you laughing the popcorn off your lap, but later get you pretty chocked up. It is an emotional roller coaster from smiles ear to ear to tears running down your cheeks.

But if you haven't seen rein over me, you haven't seen anything yet. Do not go into this movie making the mistake of feeling like you will be seeing Punch Drunk Love or Spanglish all over again. While I believe both of those movies were flops, Reign Over Me really dug himself out of the hole he was in and got him where he wanted to be. This is the best movie of the year and will not be beat. If you are a fan of movies that will hit you in the gut and really make you feel for someone, this is your movie. Please, I beg you all, this is a must see. If you walk away from this one without being touched emotionally, you literally need to get your heart checked out.

And finally, Chuck and Larry was simply hilarious. You have Adam Sandler and a big dose of Kevin James wrapped up in one comedy. Sandler is back! He brought the funny back and he did it on a very high level once again.

Adam Sandler has gone full circle in the last year and a half. He started with a movie that was both funny and sad, then went all out with the role that shocked us all, and finally he went back to his roots and did not forget where he came from.

I am looking forward to Adam's next cinematic adventures as he has really become the best in the business.

Today is the 29th day in July which brings baseball fans closer to the moment they either praise or curse the general manager of their favorite ball club. We are just three days away from the non-waiver trade deadline. No doubt, each buying general manager (GM) has all his competitors on speed dial. And the sellers have their phones turned all the way up. And while the phones are ringing and proposals are being made, next to nothing has come together for these clubs.

Many teams have expressed their needs for what they believe would put them in contention. There are teams that can fulfill those needs with the players these contending teams covet. So why hasn't there been that many trades yet? I find myself constantly asking this same perpetual question, but I have not come up with a suitable answer.

Perhaps many teams are holding out for more. For example; GM [a] may have a fine offer on the table from GM [b] and is waiting to see if a better offer will be made or if a different proposal with GM [c] will materialize. Or maybe it is like some cases where one move sparks another and we get a wildfire of transactions over the course of a few days.
Nevertheless, I still think moves will be made and am not about to give up hope on where I believe some of the big names are going. I would like to discuss some of those names right now.

Mark Teixeira
Pos. AVG HR RBI OBP SLG
1B .299 13 49 .401 .532

The Angels, Braves, and Dodgers look to be the front runners for acquiring the big first baseman. The Angels have offered first baseman Casey Kotchman and a choice of outfielders Nathan Haynes and Terry Evans. There are also reports that the Angels could offer a pitcher to the mix as well. Names like Nick Adenhart, Ervin Santana, or Joe Saunders are intriguing and likely available.

The Braves are said to have talked about Jared Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, and Matt Harrison. But there are also reports that their young prospects are not available. Perhaps they would bend on that for a guy like Teixeira.

The Dodgers like Teixeira and Joaquin Benoit or Eric Gagne. Maybe they can find a deal to work with their surplus of young talent.

My prediction here is that the Angels will get the big left handed bat for Casey Kotchman, Terry Evans, and Ervin Santana. Kotchman is having a good season and is showing he can make solid contact. He is a left handed first baseman who can step in to fill the void left by Teixeira. Terry Evans is a 25 year old centerfielder playing AAA ball for the Salt Lake Bees. He his hitting for a nice average at a .317 clip and has an .865 OPS. Not bad for someone who just caught up to his ability. And finally Ervin Santana is a work in progress but is still young and talented enough to take a chance on. If he becomes anywhere near as good as once expected, this could end up being a steal for the Rangers.

Adam Dunn
Pos. AVG HR RBI OBP SLG
LF/DH/1B .266 27 67 .368 .554

Adam Dunn has been linked to nearly every contender it seems. But Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky seems to be asking the world for him even though he would only be a rent-a-player for the rest of the season for the acquiring team.

I believe the closest teams are the Padres, Braves, and possibly the Angels or Dodgers. These teams are still in contention and a bat the size of Dunn's would be a major upgrade in the power department. I would like to believe the Padres had a shot, but after trading Scott Linebrink to the Brewers, they may not have much to offer. The other three teams are the leading candidates for the Teixeira sweepstakes and once he goes, Dunn should be plan B. I have Teixeira going to the Angels so that leaves Dunn for the Braves or Dodgers.

My prediction is that Dunn does not get traded and the Reds pick up his team option for 2008. Wayne Krivsky just isn't getting the offers he may have thought he would get and he doesn't want to pull another deal like he did with the Nationals last season. I just don't see Dunn being traded unless it is really close to the deadline and someone throws out an offer he cannot refuse. The Dodgers may be in the best position to do that. Loney, Kershaw, and Ethier may be available if the Dodgers do not land anything else.

Jermaine Dye
Pos. AVG HR RBI OBP SLG
RF .234 18 51 .295 .459

Dye once was touted as a suitor for the Yankees, but those talks ended quickly last month. The frontrunners for this outfielder are the Mets and Mariners. Dye has a partial no-trade clause and stipulations are that Dye will only be traded to a team where he will play everyday. Kenny Williams has asked for packages like Khalil Greene and Scott Linebrink for Dye and many general managers are staying away from these demands.
My only concern for the team that gets him is whether they will pay for what he did last season or if they are paying attention to his numbers this year. He was an MVP candidate last season, but just look at that OBP and tell me he is the same player. Dye may be traded afterall, but if the White Sox are wanting more than a really good glove at short stop and a nice bullpen arm, they have to be out of their minds.

I predict Dye will stay with the White Sox and become a free agent after this season. Ultimately you would think he wants to be traded to try and get a contract extension from another team. Maybe he plays well where he goes, who knows. But for now, he is not worth his seven and a half million dollar contract and any general manager can see that. This is why I do not see him fitting any contending team. And like Dunn, he is a rent-a-player.

If he is traded, I say he goes to the Cubs above all current frontrunners. Omar Minaya and the Mets should be concentrating on pitching more than offense. The Mariners are not in contention this season and I just don't see Dye re-signing a contract with them. But the Cubs are still in the race with the Brewers and they might take a chance on him. Dye may see it fitting to play for a contender and not have to move out of Chicago.

Octavio Dotel
Pos. ERA IP SO BB WHIP
RP 3.91 23 29 11 1.52

Look for Dotel to be traded at the last minute as the Royals try and get as much as they can for him. There is a whole list of teams interested in this top arm but the Dodgers have seemed to be the frontrunner since Dotel was put on the trading block. As mentioned before, the Dodgers have plenty of talent in their system. They have already mentioned that Loney and Kemp are not available for a reliever. But other prospects like Chin-Lung Hu, Tony Abreu, or Jonathan Meloan are all available and may move for Dotel.

I predict Ned Colletti and Dayton Moore will come up with something fitting for both parties. But Colletti is going to have to work real hard to get what he wants for the price he wants with so many other teams in the hunt for Dotel.

The preceeded players are likely the most sought out and most reasonable to be moved. Even though I see there being no fit for Adam Dunn and the Reds, these are the players receiving the most buzz. It is a shame to see very little movement or talk before the deadline this year. But hopefully things will heat up in the coming days. Little talk is being generated and time is burning. Let us see how close my predictions come when and if any of these players get dealt.

Predictions recapped:
Teixeira to the Angels for Santana, Kotchman, and Evans.
Dunn stays with the Reds (If not, the Dodgers will get the deal done.)
Dye stays with the White Sox (If not, the Cubs will take the chance)
Dotel to the Dodgers for Abreu and Meloan

A lot of baseball fans are in favor of the team that they are homegrown into. When I say homegrown I mean either they live in or near the city in which the baseball team plays their home games or their families have groomed them into becoming a fan of their team. In a lot of cases, it is both. Other baseball fans seem to cling on to a team that shows the desire to win. A team that is known for winning year in and year out. These fans can be understood as bandwagon fans. Nonetheless, they enjoy watching "their" team. In both cases and many others, every baseball fan can come together and understand one common concept. They want their team to win, and they want them to continue winning.

There are 30 teams in major league baseball. Each team has thousands of fans who get disappointed one way or another every year. That is, every team but one. The team that wins the World Series stands alone as the team that made their fans happy. Well, at least most of their fans. But what about seeing the team continue to win?

In the past 7 years, 7 different teams have won the World Series. So it stands to reason that it is anyone's ballgame. How are teams supposed to go about winning on a more consistent basis? Can baseball have a dynasty? If you look at 1996-2000, the Yankees won the big game 4 out of the 5 years. That could be interpreted as close to being a dynasty that baseball has seen in a very long time. If you are a baseball fan at all, you understand how the Yankees were this fortunate. The Yankees have an owner that is willing to spend money. The money spent garnered great prosperity for this conglomerate. You could say that George Steinbrenner bought his way into contention.

Many owners do not have the same fortunes or do not wish to risk their abundance on this unyielding profession. But they find themselves at a loss when they do not capitalize on their business because their product is not as marketable as they hoped. Those fans that all share the common bond of wanting to see a winner are not spending their fortunes or do not wish to risk their abundance on the unyielding franchises. So it goes hand in hand. The owner does not want to spend money, so he sees his franchise go down in flames because he is not prompting his fans to spend their money either. "If you build it, they will come" (Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams). A quick glimpse at a Kevin Costner movie could remind these owners what baseball is all about.

So what about those teams who have put themselves in contention without spending the money? These are the teams that you have to pay special attention to. If I were not a fan of a certain team and wanted to figure out which one would be worth my while. I would look in the Marlins or Twins direction. The Marlins will draft highly regarded players. Then when said players become solid at the major league level, they go into free agency ready to spend money. They buy players to fill holes. But those players are superstar type talent. The problem is, they can't afford to keep that superstar talent on the roster for too many years. "You only get one shot do not miss your chance to blow" (Eminem in Lose Yourself). The Marlins gave it their shot in 1997 and won the World Series. That same off-season, they had one of the most profitable firesales in decades. 6 years later, they had drafted some great talent and that talent was ready to go. It was time to spend money again. And spend money they did. Their homegrown talent and recently acquired stars off free agency allotted them another championship. Then came the firesale again.

The Twins on the other hand are a team that can draft with the best of them. They spend virtually no money on free agents and build within. If your owner is not willing to spend money, this is the best way for you to tell whether they are paying attention or not. The scouts need to be the best in the world at their job. You have to have guys who have a keen eye for talent. After that, you have to have the right coaches and managers in the minor leagues willing to groom them for the next level. If your draft is right, you could find yourself the rightful owner of a superstar in his prime and guarantee his playing for your team for the next 6 years. This is why the draft is so important. If your owner is going to build from within, he must have the right guys in the right place to find the right players.

This year, I have taken a look at a lot of the key players coming into the draft. Since I have pointed out the importance of drafting strong players who teams want to eventually be a major player on their roster; I also want to share their many general managers do no see the need to draft a player for a position they are in need of today. For instance, the Reds need a catcher real bad. Wayne Krivsky may not opt to draft a catcher in the first round due to the time it would take to groom said catcher into becoming a player at the major league level. That said, I have attempted a mock draft for our enjoyment over the next few days before the 2008 major league draft. Without further ado, here is my 2008 mock draft:

1. Tampa Bay- David Price, LHP, Vanderbilt *
2. Kansas City- Rick Porcello, RHP, Seton Hall Prep, NJ
3. CH Cubs- Matt Wieters, C, Georgia Tech
4. Pittsburgh- Josh Vitters, 3B, Cypress High, CA
5. Baltimore- Ross Detwiler, LHP, Missouri St.
6. Washington- Daniel Moskos, LHP, Clemson *
7. Milwaukee- Phillipe Aumont, RHP, Ecole Secondary Du Versant, Quebec
8. Colorado- Andrew Brackman, RHP, NC St.
9. Arizona- Jarrod Parker, RHP, Norwell HS, IN
10. San Francisco- Jason Heyward, OF/1B, Henry County HS, GA
11. Seattle- Matt Harvey, RHP, Fitch HS, CT
12. Florida- Michael Burgess, OF, Hillsborough HS Tampa, FL*
13. Cleveland- Matt Dominguez, 3B/SS, Chatsworth HS, CA
14. Atlanta- Michael Main, RHP, Deland HS, FL
15. Cincinnati- Mike Moustakas, 3B/C, Chatsworth HS, CA
16. Toronto- Beau Mills, CIF, Lewis-Clark St.
17. Texas- Madison Bumgarner, LHP, South Cladwell HS, NC
18. St Louis- Julio Borbon, OF, Tennessee
19. Philadelphia- Tim Alderson, RHP, Horizon HS, AR*
20. LA Dodgers- Nick Noonan, SS, Francis Parker HS, CA
21. Toronto- Casey Weathers, RHP, Vanderbilt
22. San Francisco- JP Arencibia, C, Tennessee
23. San Diego- Blake Beaven, RHP, Irving HS, TX
24. Texas- Brett Cecil, LHP, Maryland
25. CH White Sox- Mitch Canham, C, Oregon State
26. Oakland- Matt LaPorta, 1B, Florida
27. Detroit- Matt Mangini, 3B, Oklahoma St.
28. Minnesota- Peter Kozma, SS, Owasso HS, OK
29. San Francisco- Josh Smoker, LHP, LHP, Calhoun (Ga.) High School
30. NY Yankees- Jake Arrieta, RHP, TCU

*Tampa Bay needs to draft a pitcher for once. Their offence is booming with young talent. David Price is such a high commodity because he has great poise with overpowering stuff as the staff ace on the best team in college baseball. He should be of good help to Kazmir really soon.
*Washington finally takes a pitcher. Jim Bowden ought to be shaking in his leather pants when he does so. But if he doesn't, he could be officially noted as one that does not value his job. The Nats need pitching any way they can get it. And they have a long way to go to build a respectable rotation.
*The Marlins could have gone with Matt Dominguez here as he may be a better player than Burgess. But they have a future locked up in Cabrera at 3B and Ramirez at SS. No need to worry about those positions for a long time. Burgess is a big pick still.
*I have Philadelphia taking Alderson here because he is atop rated pitcher with great deception. Philadelphia has good talent in the starting rotation, but I see Alderson becoming a reliever. He already throws strictly from the stretch and has a deceptive windup. I think this is a plus pick for a possible reliever and best in the class if he does become one.

That is it. That is how my mock draft turns out. Hopefully the scouts can debate strong enough about "their guys" to the general managers in order to get some help for our teams. Because we all know, we want our team to win, and win consistently.
