    Nationals Guzman Offered Extension

According to MLB.com, the Nationals offered shortstop Cristian Guzman a two-year extension on Wednesday.
Well, he's given the Nationals six pretty good months during his current four-year deal. The team should be able to count on getting three more if it locks him up for an additional two years. The unfortunate truth is that there's absolutely no one to replace him in the minors, and the top two free-agent shortstops -- Rafael Furcal and Orlando Cabrera -- figure to get overpaid by other teams. The Nats could do worse than bringing Guzman back for another $8 million or so. Unfortunately, he'll probably want a raise to $5 million-$6 million per season.
Hate to say it but this does seem like a smart move. There isn't much on the market or any really good trade possibilities. He is having a good season hitting .312 and on pace to have a career year in homers. Plus he's only 30 so he is right in the prime years. As long as he doesn't get too much of a raise, I say do it.

I think the Nats had to do this. They really need a player that consistently can hit at the top of there lineup and they needed to get him signed. They need to get a group of players on this team and say these are the guys we are going to build around and go with it.

He'll really make them regret this until the last year of any potential deal. Way to show 'em Guz.

Guzman has disappeared for about 4 years. To ignore the fact that this is all contract year performance is the reason the Nationals are not going to improve as quickly as they'd like. The other reason is Nick Johnson and Paul LoDuca's inability to stay healthy. They need to realize that Guzman is gonna want like 5 million a year, and let him know that that is WAY too high.

Guzman hasn't been healthy for almost his entire tenure in Washington. When he has played, he has done well.

But would you sign a guy who hasn't stayed healthy to a multi year deal? Especially when he's getting older, and hasn't been very good in a while.

A two year extension isn't that much especially with the weak free agent market. Rather sign him for two years than sign Furcal or Cabrera to multi year deals for a shit load of money.
