Sportsnet.ca -- The injury bug has made its way into the Blue Jays' bullpen as the team placed Jeremy Accardo on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain.

Accardo is 0-3 with four saves and a 6.57 ERA in 12.1 innings pitched.

The team purchased the contract of veteran reliever Armando Benitez from triple-A Syracuse to fill the spot. This season between Dunedin (A) and Syracuse, the 35-year-old right-hander is 1-0, 3.38 ERA in eight appearances with nine strikeouts in eight innings. A roster move is forthcoming to get Benitez onto the 40-man roster.

This will be Benitez's seventh major league team, having played for Baltimore (1994-98), NY Mets (1999-2003), NY Yankees (2003), Seattle (2003), Florida (2004, 2007), and San Francisco (2005-07) over his 14 Major League seasons. His 289 career saves ranks 23rd all-time.

The Jays will also be without centre fielder Vernon Wells on Saturday after the all-star jammed his wrist diving for a ball in the outfield against Cleveland. Toronto manager John Gibbons said Wells is scheduled to have an MRI and would not play Saturday night.

Shannon Stewart filled in for Wells on Friday night.

something was wrong with Accardo since almost the start of the season, so this probably for the best, but I can't believe they really called up Armando Benitez, god help us.

Wells injury will not help if he's gone for any length of time, he was one of the few people who was actually hitting the ball.

Wells is out 6-8 weeks. Ever since that big contract, Wells has been shit. Sucks

Two big loses for the Jays. Accardo is key to getting to B. J. Rayan who now has to step up and be the full time closer unless the Jays are crazy enough to use Benitez in that role sometimes. And Wells is a big loss in the lineup. I don't care if he is having a down year. He is a leader for the Jays and he will be sorely lost.
