The Toronto Blue Jays outfield sitution just got a little more crowded.

The team announced on Friday that they signed free agent outfielder Brad Wilkerson and acquired outfielder Kevin Mench from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.

Wilkerson was most recently with the Seattle Mariners prior to being released on April 30. The 6'0” 205 pound outfielder batted .232 in 19 games with the Mariners, including four doubles and 10 walks in just 56 at-bats.

The 30-year old is a career .249 hitter with an on-base percentage of .354, adding 118 home runs in 887 games. Wilkerson has surpassed the 20 home run mark three times in his eight year career, highlighted by a 32 home run season with the Montreal Expos in 2004.

Mench has appeared in 29 games with Triple-A Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League in 2008, where the 30-year old posted a .282 average with three home runs and 18 RBI.

The Wilmington, Delaware native has played for the Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers over a six year major league career, posting a .271 career average with 89 home runs and 320 RBI.

In 2004 & 2005, Mench recorded back-to-back 25+ home runs seasons with the Texas Rangers and became just the 19th player in history to hit a home run in six consecutive games in 2006.

To make room on the 25-man roster, infielder Joe Inglett has been optioned to Syracuse. Furthermore, to allow room on the 40-man roster pitcher Gustavo Chacin and infielder Sergio Santos have been designated for assignment.
ok two SS go down to injury and the jays get two Outfielders, way to go JP

Desperate times for a GM on his last life I hope.

Mench will likely only hit LHP with Stairs taking the RHP and same for Wilkerson and Stewart.

adds depth to the Jays bench with some punch. gives the Jays some options. maybe even at the trade deadline they can use them for another piece to the puzzle.

The Jays do get added depth to there team with these additions, but are these guys really the answer, I don't think so. It is sad that Adam Lind has been sort of a bust.
