The Rangers will announce Thursday that they've acquired Chris Shelton from the Tigers for Freddy Guzman.
Shelton finally catches a break, as he's going to a very good situation in Texas. The Rockies will likely sign a first baseman, but it could be a left-handed hitter (maybe Mike Lamb) that he'd get a chance to platoon with. He'd also be a backup option as a DH.
Remember Shelton from that April in '06? Now he's got a chance of playing in Texas. He's really not a bad option backing up first and DHing. I don't like the fact they are thinking about starting Salty in AAA.

Shelton isn't a bad option at all. He's been a pretty solid hitter his last couple of big league seasons. The article on the Rangers site said they are also looking at signing Sean Casey to play firstbase. That really doesn't make much sense after they give up their biggest power bat for Saltalamacchia.

Where would that leave Salty if Casey came to town? He can play in the field pretty well, so DH is not the only place for him. I think this is sort of like the Rangers acquiring Adrian Gonzales a few years back. He simply didn't fit into the long-term plans of the team. Sean Casey would be better served to go to a team that truly needs him to play at 1B. There are several out there.
Shelton is not a bad option, I agree. He can rotate with Salty and should be able to help Salty with the finer points of playing 1B. He isn't the fielder that Casey is, but he is acceptible.
