ARLINGTON --

The Rangers have traded designated hitter Phil Nevin to the Chicago Cubs for infielder Jerry Hairston Jr.

The Rangers are also including cash in the deal. An announcement is expected after the Rangers game with the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.

Nevin is hitting .216 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs and had lost his designated hitter job to rookie Jason Botts. Hairston is hitting .206 for the Cubs.

The Rangers acquired Nevin last July 30 from the Padres for pitcher Chan Ho Park.

Seems like a good trade to me. I don't know how much Hairston is making but it can't be anywhere near what Nevin is making. Nevin did alright for us but it's about the young guys in Texas and Botts fits that bill over Nevin.

Perhaps you got all of you could out of Nevin. His numbers seemed to go since 4 weeks ago.

The problem is, while Nevin has a 10 million dollar salary, there's no way in hell the Cubs took it all on; the Rangers probably paid a good part of that.

I heard Texas took 3 Mil of the contract. I like Hairston cause he can play in the field if need be.

He did come up with a couple of big homeruns in the last week but yeah, he really lost it around the end of April, beginning of May.

I really couldn't care less about Hairston. He will just be a utility player. Texas dumps some salary and gets to see what Botts can do in a starting role. Those are the upsides of the deal to me.

I've always been a Hairston fan. Good deal for the Rangers.

they save some money, didn't get Clemens, and will be in a good position to add at the deadline if they can hold on until then.
