Would Ken Griffey Jr. help? -
06-15-2008, 10:42 PM
I guess the hot rumor is that Junior would waive his no trade clause fer ole Tampa. Is he a good fit for them?
Tampa's had a lot of unsuccess down in the lineup. Gross/Gomes have bit more miss than hit, Clifford has his moments but he's pretty fragile is best as a situational hitter, and they're getting little to nothing from shortstop. I can see them wanting another bat, a good one of sorts, not sure if that's Junior. He seems to now be a situational guy too.. can't hit lefties, fielding is not as good, fragile, and his slugging is dipping under .400
I hope the Rays don't panic and unload some of their fine arms for Junior.

1) is he a good fit? I say yes
2) should they TRADE for him? no. he's not worth whatever the reds would ask for him. If this were a signing, i'd be all for it. but a trade? nope. i agree with zito. he's not worth the young arms the reds would want.
I think he's a good fit because they need a veteran in this lineup besides pena. and griffey i think would inspire some of these young guys. he'd be great for bringing in fans too. Griffey, combined with the rays' sudden surge this year, would do exactly that. This would really boost the players' confidence as well as give them some extra moolah to work with.

They'd jump from 10,000 fans to 10,022 fans.

I think they should inquire about Nady and Bay, see if they can get either and get Marte in the deal for lefty pen depth.

I would hope that the Reds front office would recognize the value of Junior as it is right now rather than what it was when they acquired him and would adjust demands accordingly. If theres a contender that "wants" Junior the Reds ought to do everything they can to get Junior to a contender and play in October.
Is Tampa a good fit? Meh I dunno.
I think the Reds demands would be less than some assure unless someone is desperate and starts the bar really high.

They probably should let Junior go to a real contender. But I'm sure Walt Jocketty is going to see if anyone will over pay before he dumps him off on ____ for a 5th string catcher. Jocketty is too smart to pass up any opportunities that present themselves and as much as we could all stop and say no one would be dumb enough to give up a big haul, we all know that it happens more often than not.

The presence of a veteren to that lineup could be a big help to the Rays, but at what expense. The Rays have developed on of the best young team and minor league systems in all of baseball and it would be a shame for them to have to unload too much of that young talent for a guy who may help him for a half a season.

I don't think he would be a good fit. The Rays have veterans on this squad. Hell, Crawford is a veteran now. Justin Ruggiano is waiting in AAA to get his shot to play RF and even DL veteran Baldelli is starting to rehab. Giving up anything for Griffey is not the right move for this team. You can find a DH anywhere.
Giants > Padres
Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.70 career ERA, but has won just 29 of his 95 starts.

Who wouldn't want a 16 million dollar old corner outfielder with a long injury history who acts like a prima donna?
Oh yeah, he's also not much of a hitter anymore.

As a Reds fan I would say Jr. would not help out TB nor any other team in the league.
