I keep hearing about the Mariners making a big splash for a SP or two. Yet the only guy we signed was a middle of the rotation starter in Carlos Silva. Bavasi knows hes on the hot seat. Why can't he pull the trigger on anyone? If we have to sacrifice some of the future to get a guy like Haren, Bedard or Santana, DO IT. All of Seattle knows we have money and resources to get some people here. I just don't think that Bavasi is the guy to get us over the hump that is the LA Angels.
In the funniest of turns, supposedly confident Brian Billick thought he was coming back in 2008. So much that for that theory as he got canned today out of nowhere. Maybe next time, Billick will actually not get too secure and beat the lowly Dolphins. Now about the Dolphins, What should they do with Cam Cameron, give him another chance or look elsewhere? Also should they ask Zach Thomas to retire before he ends up being a shell altogether? This NFL offseason should be very interesting to say the least.
The M's today named Erik Bedard their OPENING DAY STARTER. I would have like to see Felix and Bedard at least have a battle for this job. I think they could push each other to having a solid seasons this year. This could be a crossroads type of a year for Seattle. Most of the team is signed through 2010, but yet again the ML team is aging quickly on offense. We had that problem before and it never seems to get fixed since the 2000-2001 season. Bavasi, we have the youthful pitching, go out and get younger on offense for the sake of the fans or step off the train.
Dave Niehaus has been the only play-by-play guy this franchise has ever known in its full history. He finally got the call for the Ford Frick award, sending him into the hall of fame. This has been long overdue for a while now. He never has been that guy to make too much attention to himself. There isn't the annoying gimmicks that the White Sox play by play announcers does. You wont see him on the four letter network making a fool of himself. Then I got to thinking, Seattle has been very blessed with announcers here.
Seahawks: Raible since 1976
Sonics: Collabro since the 80's i think
Mariners: Neihaus since 1977
Once again its that time for the NFL's Combine. It should be called the over thinking of any draft prospect that has a glorified practice session. This is about as bad as Pro Bowl. The question should be can the guy play football or not. Not the discrimination of the size, height and speed. You're not going to find a perfect player, so stop trying to think that the this is going to make your decision any easier. The World Series of Poker has the same amount of chances of finding a gem or bust as the Combine does. For every Moneymaker that wins the World Series, there is a guy like Raymer that can actually make a good career out of it. For every Akili Smith, there is a Tom Brady. What is the difference of this event? Not a damn thing.
You know maybe we don't realize how good JJ Putz really is until he is out. They just blew the game yesterday, up 2-0 with Felix on cruise control and to just give that away is just sick. This brought back memories and horror of Jose Mesa and Bobby Ayala. Sigh.
I'm going down to Tacoma tomorrow to see the Rainiers play vs Las Vegas. Its been a while since Ive been to Cheney Stadium. They are playing great baseball of late and I want to see some of the young guys play before the M's call them up. As for this season, Its been a trainwreck and can only be explained in one way.....
Going to see the Yankees for the 1st time at the Safe ever. Should be a good series of long balls and the Tacoma Rainiers being called up in mass droves.
