Lowe to miss start of 2007
Source

Mark Lowe was one of the very few bright spots last season, with his franchise record 17 2/3 scoreless innings to start his career. He will have elbow surgery this offseason and he might be available for spring training.

"In essence, what they found was a bone-on-bone situation in my elbow," Lowe told the News Tribune. "They did a procedure that helps with the regeneration of cartilage. Now, the only thing I can do is rest and let the healing process occur."

Lowe -- who set a franchise record by opening his career with 17 2/3 scoreless innings -- hopes to begin throwing in Spring Training, but that's only if there's no pain in his elbow.

Beyond that, no one knows when or if Lowe will return to action with the Mariners.
The curse of the M's spect pitchers and their arms falling apart is really sickening. But I hope Lowe gets to pitch at any time during his career. But its not looking good if its bone on bone.

The Toronto Star says that the Jays have a better shot at signing Gil Meche than they do bringing back Ted Lilly or signing Vicente Padilla.
Clearly, a lot of teams liked what they saw from Meche down the stretch last season, as he was hitting 98 mph on the gun at times. That said, he's never thrown 190 innings in a season and he has a career ERA of 4.65 and a WHIP of 1.44 despite working in a pitcher's park. If he really gets something like $30 million for three years or $36 million for four from the Cubs, Yankees or Blue Jays, he could be quite a bust.

Mariners released RHP Jorge Campillo.
Campillo, 28, was designated for assignment on Nov. 20. He'll look for a minor league contract elsewhere.

Mariners targeting ex-Nat Guillen

SEATTLE -- The Mariners' search for a corner outfielder with power has turned to former Washington Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen.

Sources indicated on Saturday that Seattle has targeted the 30-year-old Guillen, who appeared in just 69 games last season before having surgery to reconstruct his right elbow in July.

ESPN.com reported Saturday that the Mariners have reached a one-year, $5 million contract with Guillen. The report said the contract includes the possibility of another $3 million in performance-based bonuses and has a $9 million option for the 2008 season.
I think this is a pretty good deal considering what Pierre, Soriano and others went for. My concern is can his style of hitting work at the Safe. Im glad Ichiro swallowed his pride and moved to CF, so we could make this move.

Mariners designated LHP Bobby Livingston for assignment.
The Mariners were rather high on Livingston a year ago, but he was a disappointment in Triple-A, finishing 8-11 with 4.59 ERA, 165 H, 69/36 K/BB in 135 1/3 IP. He also struggled in a brief stint in the Seattle pen and posted a 10.45 ERA in the AFL. A soft-tosser without much in the way of upside, he wouldn't be a big loss for the Mariners if he's claimed on waivers.

Livingston is right now a AAAA player at best. He is also a very streaky player.

A source told MLB.com that the Mariners had interest in a potential three-way deal that would net them Tim Hudson and Adam LaRoche from the Braves and send Richie Sexson to San Francisco.
The Braves would get Rafael Soriano from Seattle and Armando Benitez from the Giants, which sounds like a pretty terrible deal for them. Soriano would be a fine acquisition, of course, but Benitez's salary gives him negative value. Substitute Benitez with left-hander Jonathan Sanchez and second baseman Kevin Frandsen and maybe there's the potential for a deal.
I too doubt Benitez being a selling point. Sanchez and maybe someone like Hennessey but not Frandsen. I like his potential.

2008 Giants > Padres

Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

Free agent Carl Everett, who didn't sign with another team after being cut by the Mariners in July, would like to play next season.
Everett's behavior was worth putting up with when he was a quality regular. Now that he's a 35-year-old fringe player, he's going to have a harder time than most finding work. Still, it's likely that he'll be offered minor league contracts by a few teams.

Saw this today, I was hoping the Jays would step up and sign him but oh well, good luck

Chris Reitsma agreed Friday to a US$2.05-million, one-year contract with Seattle to become the Mariners' setup reliever.

The Calgary-raised right-hander gets $1.35 million this year and can earn additional bonuses based on appearances and games finished. Seattle has a $2.7-million option for 2008 with a $700,000 buyout.

He became a free agent last month when the Braves failed to offer a 2007 contract. He made $2.75 million in 2006.

Reitsma pitched for Canada at the World Baseball Classic last spring before being named the Braves' closer. He lost that job after blowing four of 12 chances. He was 1-2 with an 8.68 ERA in 27 starts before season-ending surgery on his pitching elbow on July 18.

In his final appearance of the season July 1, he felt a zinger go up his arm that caused his fingers to twitch uncontrollably.

Reitsma, who made $2.75 million last year, will assume the Mariners' setup role for closer J.J. Putz. Seattle traded 2006 setup man Rafael Soriano to the Braves for starting pitcher Horacio Ramirez earlier this off-season.

Mark Lowe, a rookie surprise in 2006 who was on track to be Putz's setup man in '07, had arm surgery in the fall. The Mariners don't know when Lowe will return.

"Chris is a proven, quality major league pitcher and his ability and track record show that he can pitch at the end of games," Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said. "When we made our trades earlier this winter, we were confident that setup-quality relief would be available to restock our bullpen."

Reitsma, who turned 29 last week, has a career record of 32-44 with 37 saves and a 4.58 ERA in 312 appearances, including 53 starts. He pitched for Cincinnati in 2001-03 before joining Atlanta in '04.

"Chris is a kid who wants to pitch every day," Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said. "In the bullpen, one of the most valuable qualities a pitcher can have is consistency, both in t
