Re: Jake Peavy traded this offseason? -
10-01-2008, 05:15 PM
I guess there's no Joba in our future.
One potential catch: As part of the $52-million extension Peavy received last season from CEO Sandy Alderson and Towers, he also obtained full no-trade powers through the 2010 season.
Peavy's consent, therefore, would be needed for a trade to any of the other 29 clubs.
What's more, Peavy told The San Diego Union-Tribune on Saturday that if it ever comes to it, he would only accept a trade to a National League team. If so, that would remove two of baseball's biggest spenders that Towers long has cultivated for trade purposes – the Yankees and Red Sox.

Hey Omar! If you can get Peavy, give up F-Mart and the rest of the farm system.

Peavy Is Available -
10-14-2008, 06:59 PM
Sorry to all you guys looking for a date. You came to the wrong place.
It has been 10 months since the Padres did everything in their power to keep Jake Peavy from testing free agency, signing him to a $52 million contract extension. But one season and 99 losses later, the team has let it be known that the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner is available for a trade. The Padres' willingness to listen to offers for a player under contract through at least 2012 reveals a shift in the organization's direction caused by a 63-99 showing in 2008. When Peavy's extension was finalized last winter, the Padres had strung together four straight winning seasons with playoff appearances in 2005 and '06. "This was a different year than last year," general manager Kevin Towers said of the shift in priorities, before noting the difficulty. "You're arguably talking about moving one of the top pitchers in the game. But it's not a 100-percent given. "Nothing is imminent." Especially because Peavy, who didn't return a call seeking comment, is set to earn $11 million in 2009, a relative bargain for a pitcher of his caliber and history of success. And unless the Padres are knocked off their feet by an offer ---- think similar to the six prospects the Arizona Diamondbacks sent to Oakland in exchange for ace pitcher Dan Haren ---- they don't have to move Peavy.
|
Question is if a team is willing to give up big prospects instead of simply getting a Sabathia, Burnett or Sheets. Sure it will save money but you are also giving up big pieces to your future. The Padres will have to have all the hairs on Towers head to be blown back and eventually off to trade Peavy. Padres need to be strengthening the rotation, not making it weaker. Let the drooling begin!!

Kevin Towers explicitly stated that he's sizing up people's trade values, Jake included.
He's not going to trade him just to trade him.
But, sure, if someone wants to fork over a king's ransom he might go for it.

I'm ready for an offseason of obscene trade rumors, followed by Peavy going nowhere, and the Padres saying they had no intention of moving him in the first place.

I agree, that's the most likely scenario.

A person familiar with the talks told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Braves and Padres have discussed a Jake Peavy trade.
Dicussions supposedly involve at least three Braves prospects. The Padres would have to get either Jordan Schafer or Jason Heyward in a Peavy deal. They might also have interest in major leaguers Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and Jair Jurrjens.
|
ESPN is also reporting teams are turning in names for a possible trade. Jake has a no-trade clause so its up to him ultimately. I can see the Braves parting ways with Kelly Johnson in a deal for Peavy.

Jake has already stated that he's not going to any AL teams, so that cuts the competition in half.
