I don't know about 20 mil, but he may still be out of our price range.

Who knows, though?

I certainly wouldn't mind Penny or Sheets, but I also never get my hopes up when it comes to free agency.

The Padres prefer to make trades for underrated players.

I think we stand a better shot at KT finding another Chris Young in a trade than we do at them signing Sheets, CC, or Penny (if the Dodgers don't resign him)

why not though? Zito got 18 mil a year over 7 and he was coming off a pretty average year with the A's.

Potential pays, and I doubt Sheets would take a mid level contract filled with escalators either, the guy is a proven no. 1 when he's healthy.

a quality no. 1 in the free agent market will command a lot of money, regardless of how fragile he is. Someone will always be stupid enough to overpay.

Kobe, the Zito deal is exactly why Sheets isn;t going to get that money.

Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

3 pitchers on that list thats coming off of a injury or two. Definitely no to Prior, but what about someone like Clement or Colon?
Prior won't even be "coming off" injury. He'll still be injured.

okay, maybe im going to get crucified for posting this here, b/c well... THIS is a Padres forum.

But to me, Peavy and Sheets, the difference is well. Very minimal. Both are established aces. And both aren't exactly your definition of very reliable work-horse. In 6 seasons Peavy went 200 + only what.. 3 times? and two of those times were BARELY over 200 IP.

Sheets on the other hand. 8 seasons, over 200 IP 3 times.

Point being, Peavy got a 17 mil per extension, imagine what a proven ace like Sheets can command on the open market. Regardless of durability issues.

If you were a team thats one ace away from being a WS contender, do you not throw that kind of money at a guy like Sheets? You can't honestly sit here and tell me nobody will pay that kind of money to Sheets.

Off the top of my head, I know the Yankees/Red Sox and Mets would.
