Asked if Bud Black will return as Padres manager in 2009, Kevin Towers said: "We will address our entire coaching staff's situation at the completion of the 2008 season. I don't feel that it is the appropriate time with games still to be played to discuss coaches' contracts or players' contracts." In March, Alderson and Towers picked up Black's option for 2009. Several players said they expect that Black will return for 2009. But the front office's refusal to make it official might signal that it deems improvement is needed from both Black and his coaches.
I don't think its fair to fire Bud Black but you guys would know how he manages better than me. The Padres did not provide him a lot of prime talent to manage this year so most of the blame should go on the then the front office. Building a lineup with guys who strike out a lot is not a recipe for success. Give Black more time and a lot more talent and the padres should rise towards the top of the West.

I'd give him a mulligan, all things considered, but at the same time I haven't really been able to watch many games this year.

letting Bochy go was a mistake.

But then again if Bochy was still here, so would Vinny Castilla and Jose Cruz Jr and all those other has beens.

Maybe we would still have Edmonds!

Vinny Castilla was let go before Bochy was.

Jose Cruz Jr was acquired after Bochy was let go.

Black had a solid rookie campaign in his first season and was dealt a crap hand in his 2nd.....I'd give him 2 more full years to see what he's made of.......There is no way we know for sure what kind of manager we have after less than 2 full seasons, one of which being his first ever

Dude, first of all I can't believe YOU started this thread.

Secondly, your above statement sums up the entire 40 years of Pads history.
The front office as ALWAYS sucks. Why should anything change now?

The current FO has had this team in contention more than any other FO has.

They're also responsible for the most successful 4 year run the Padres organization has ever seen.

That being said, there's always room for improvement.

This current FO has done amazing things overall........ our farm is.....strong (yes I'm going to go ahead and use that word) for the first time ever.......and we are next year at AAA we're going to have some bigtime potential game changing types of talent, and at AA and below the talent pool is VERY deep......The new DR facility is incredible, and should give us a much greater pull than ever before in a market rich with talent, and this draft in the DR shows just that....it was a very very big draft down there for us.......of course with all prospects only time will tell, but on the surface so far....SO DAMN GOOD.....

In the meantime we've been div. winners 2 of the last 4 years, and in it until the very end in all but one season since Petco opened........

My god even with this crappy season it's a great time to be a Padre fan guys

Here's a move the further help the farm system:
General Manager Kevin Towers has said the Padres likely will decrease their major league payroll, which could increase the club's draft budget. Under CEO Sandy Alderson, who was hired in large part to build a strong farm system, the Padres have sharply increased their investments in the amateur markets

News flash........Padres payroll will drop due to a shitload of crap players and a few veterans possibly not coming back.........whew.......

On a side note it might mean they will spend more on draft picks, even those they spent more than ever before in 2008 on the draft.........weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
