After a disastrous 2008 season for the Padres, Kevin Towers will have to make the tough decision on whether to bring back their future HOF closer or not. I personally don't think Trevor will be back next year. He either retires or the Padres move on. Hard to see a GM re-sign a declining closer after what is likely a 100 loss season. There has already been talk of a multi-year deal with Heath Bell. If you were the GM, what would you do?

2008 Giants > Padres

Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

It's tough...I'd give him the chance to come back, but I would make him compete for the closer's role, and I'd ask him to take a pay cut. He probably wouldn't like it, but that would be the offer on the table if I were GM.

He'll bring him back I think. He's gotta ride his career out as a Padre I would think

I don't think he'll be back, but if I were Kevin Towers, I'd give him an opportunity to show his loyalty. If he wants to be back badly enough to take a non-guaranteed role, then give him a shot. If he wants a guaranteed closer's role, and expects closer money, then it's time to part ways.

I'd urge him to retire, but if he truly wants to keep pitching I'd allow him the opportunity to finish his career as a Padre....but he wouldn't be the closer anymore.

That might cause some bad blood, but he's clearly on the rough decline and the Padres have to do what's best for the team.

If Trevor still wants to pitch and insists on maintaining the closer's role I'd wish him luck and let him test the market so he can become yet another all time great with a minor footnote at the end of his career in a different uniform then the one he made his name for.

His save % is right there with his HOF career %........he's still got it even if he makes us all crazy now.......the problem is we're spoiled in the position and it's going to be a painful growth period for Padre fans when he does finally hang them up.

I hope he retires when he's ready too, not when he's "forced out" so to speak........

Bring back the Chicken !!

Get'r done KT...........
2008 Predictions
-Prior ( if he proves healthy ) signs a multi-year extension in Sept. - not healthy, no contract for you
-Gerut makes team, and has a great season
-Edmonds was a total BUST
