What would you suggest........REALISTICALLY........they do right now ? Today ?
If you can't come up with a real answer......don't bother tossing out gibberish......when you pose a question like that........know what the answer an answer is first........otherwise it comes across as whining
Bring back the Chicken !!

So you're ok with just being competetive, regardless if they keep getting run out of the playoffs with just 1 win in 7 playoff games?
Look, I like pitching and defense as much as the next guy, but you can't be ok with good pitching, good bullpen and a mediocre offense. If you can't score runs, you're pitching is going to mean jack s***.
Remember when Seattle came to town? Remember how they kicked the Padres' ass? BECAUSE THEY HIT WITH RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION! How many times have the Padres had runners in scoring position or bases loaded with noone out and they couldn't get 1 of those runs in?
Yes, they're on the right track with the draft picks that they've made, with kids like Antonelli, Headley, Blanks, Friese, Huffman, etc, so this Franchise is on the right track for the future. But, let's be honest, we're not going to see any of those guys until possibly mid-season 2008.

This is why I hate it when people pose that question in that context. "How long are they going to be satisfied with..."
Because whenever someone inevitabley comes back with the obvious "well, what do you propose they do?" response they're accused of not caring about winning in the playoffs.
That's not what it's about and it's an insult to suggest to PFF (and by proxy myself since I agreed with his post) that he (and I) don't care about winning in the playoffs.
It's about asking what can they do? To suggest they are "satisfied with being competitive and nothing more" suggests that if there was a move that can be made that'd give them a better shot at winning it all they wouldn't do it.
Could it be that there's just nothing out there that wouldn't be too much of a risk for the future?
You can argue that they should take a particular gamble, but to be quite honest, I think it's pretty asinine to suggest they don't want to win past the playoffs.
And, again, if you're going to accuse them of sitting on their hands....you have to tell us what they're not doing that they could be doing.

While this is certainly true...what do you propose they do to fix it?

What does this have to do with your accusation of them not caring about winning in the playoffs?

Hey Hollywood, before you respond to my post, don't put words in my mouth and say I suggested anything. The first part of my post was a question, not a suggestion. A suggestion wouldn't be ended with a question mark, so don't assume. If you want to know what I meant...ASK, it's real simple dude.
Second, what can they do to fix it? Why preach "patience at the plate" when there's only 2 or 3 guys that practice it? You want them to get on base, but if the guys behind them can't move them or drive them in, what's the point of preaching "on base percentage"? I'm not blaming the hitting coach and never have, these are major league hitters who should know how to hit in all situations and should, AT LEAST, be able to hit a sac fly with a runner on 3rd and 1 out, or a grounder to the right side of the infield with a runner on 2nd.
And to finish, to say "it's insulting to suggest" kind of response to your post, I didn't suggest anything to anyone or about anyone. I asked a question and you assumed it meant something different.

Thanks Hollywood Leo!
How do you think the Pads are going to do?
I say they might make the playoffs, but probably not in the cards until next year when the young guys get called up.

If Arizona keeps winning, and the way Atlanta and Philly has been playing, I wouldn't count on a playoff appearance either. As far as the minor league kids, I doubt we'll see the likes of Antonelli or Headley until mid-season 2008.

You're right, I did jump the gun a bit.
But I still find it insulting to even ask him the question.
Why would a Padres fan not care about winning in the playoffs? Or, as worded, be "satisfied with only being competitive"?

You keep focusing on what the guys on the current roster are doing and nobody's arguing that.
The initial claim was a question of "When is this front office going to be done just being "competetive"?"
This question suggests that that's all they care about and it's this notion that's being put into question.
So, again, if they're not concerned with winning in the playoffs what are they not doing to fix the issues you list above that they could be doing?

I assumed it meant that you were putting into question PFF's (and mine, by proxy) desire to win in the playoffs.
Is that not what the question was asking? Because I find it insulting for such a question to even be asked. You should already know the answer to that question and thus shouldn't have to ask it.

Who knows, but if they keep playing like they did for 2 of the 3 games out of this series they'll be there.
On a side note, I finally predict another one right.
