Interesting mix of the young and the old in that rotation. Not a bad signing, Wells seems to still have a little bit left and at $3 mil it's not going to cost much. I would make sure there's some definite insurance waiting in the wings though because you never know if you're going to get a full season out of Boomer.

I think the incentives take care of the "insurance" kind of thing. If Boomer doesn't stay healthy, he doesn't receive the incentives in the contract. I think that was a good idea by KT and the front office not to give him guarunteed money.

He does battle. Incentives are always great. They should pay a base salary to all players and have incentive laden contracts!

I think incentive laden contracts are the way to go with the older players like Maddux and Wells, but not with the younger guys.

It's very interesting and a great mix IMO....and as far as having someone waiting in the wings, we do have Estes signed and he should be ready around mid-season....so if Boomer starts to falter, Estes, Thompson & Stauffer should have no problem filling in the #5 role.....this is also not counting on Carillo who I think will likely have to have season ending surgery....
So we're actually very deep in the rotation especially after then #3 spot

Incentive deals are the way to go no matter who the player is....but young guys don't need to sign those the way things are right now....but getting paid to produce is the way it should be for everyone......don't produce, don't get paid...what would encourage guys to give 100% all the time more ?

If you add incentives to the deals with guys like Zito and Soriano, they'd be much higher than what we're seeing right now. They ask for a certain amount of guarunteed money + incentives? That would send it through the roof.

Carillo was sidelined last season in AAA because of soreness in his elbow, depending on the severity of that "soreness", surgery may be the answer.

In my idea of a proper incentive laden contract is everyone has a salary based on years of service, what the agent negotiates is the incentives prices!!!
