Mets catching the Cubs in 1969. It was about the same scenario as the Mets this year. IMO, the only difference is that the pitching was much better because there were not as many teams. Which makes it harder, because there were not as many weak teams.

I forgot to add my vote for dishonorable mention: the choke job by Brooklyn that culminated with "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"
On a sidenote, the Giants helped themselves by stealing signals, but that's another topic.
