The New York Mets signed 16-year-old outfielder, Fernando Martinez, to a 1.4 million dollar signing bonus.
Martinez got one of the richest deals in history for a prospect from the Dominican Republic. He will not be allowed to play in the minors until he is 18. Also some scouts say a move to the mound could be in his near future.

Knowing the Mets, they will probably trade him for a #5 starter.

That's just wrong, signing a 16 year old in general. Let alone for 1.4 million.

I'd sign for $1.4 mil.

If you were 16 years old and a genius computer programmer, and Microsoft offered you a multi-million dollar career.. would you take it? ****ing straight. Which is why I don't get why people bash athletes for doing the same thing.

I'm not bashing him. I don't think it's right to spend 1.4 million on a 16 year old athlete. I would defintely do it if I was him.

Well, the Mets are dying for star talent.. and the Dominican Republic is as good a place to look for that kind of talent as any.

I would be extremely surprised if Minaya is still the GM that this kid doesnt get traded eventually. He raped the Expos farm system a few times when trying to compete.

It's got to be nice to have that kind of cash to acquire a prospect like that. From everything I have read about the signing, it sounds like this kid has potential out the ying-yang. Good luck with him Mets fans.
