Almighty Umpire in the Sky,
In the name of all that is holy, please give the Mets the strength and intelligence to beat the Yankees this weekend. I know the Amazin's haven't done much lately to promote the faith or inspire devotion in the masses, but I fear a loss at the hand of the Bronx Bombers after an embarrassing and heart-wrenching 1-0 loss to the lowly Nationals.
Please provide Willie Randolph with the wisdom to find the right formula for success, be it the proper times to change the pitcher or the best alignment for the lineup. Randolph's had a great deal of trouble lately with these deceptively difficult tasks, and this prayer may be the last chance for him to make the wrong things right.
Please guide the bats of Wright, Beltran, Reyes, and the rest to contact the baseball with great consistency. While their ability to grind out a run every now and then is admirable, the hitters need to build momentum from each other's success and keep the forces of evil a safe distance from a save situation.
Please rehabilitate the arm of Aaron Heilman, which has fallen on hard times as of late. He's shaken the confidence of the Shea Faithful ever since he surrendered a hard-luck home run to Yadier Molina, and it's certainly snowballed as of late. He's a good man who may not regain his potential if the Shea Faithful cannot support him. And he went to Notre Dame, which I know is one of your favorite schools.
And most importantly, please guide the Mets to a series win in the South Bronx this weekend because I firmly believe the Shea Faithful will lose their way if the Amazin's should fall. They will call for the heads of their team, abandon them, and generally lose all sense of sanity and reason. Moreover, as we would endure the end of all goodwill towards man, we would also be subjected to the ire and wrath of Yankee fans. They exhibit no tact and cannot be reasoned with, and their inability to summon any rational argument for the Yankees' superiority other than summing up the number of World Championships their team won long before any of them were born would simply be too much to bear for any devoted Mets fan.
As a token of my gratitude for your blessing over the Mets these next three days, I also offer a wish that the Yankees team and players bring their A-game to match up with the Mets. Exciting, solid baseball will cure the ails of both of these teams even if their interleague matchups are tired and happen a lot more often than they should in a season with a Wild Card in play. When the Mets slay the Yankees, I want it to be the Yankees and not a caricature.
We ask this in the name of Tom Seaver. Amen.

Were the nationals screaming and hollering during the 1-0 victory?
