First Round of the Playoffs Best of 1??

Lew Wolff has a way to shorten baseball's postseason: Make the first round best-of-one. "I'd make it one-game-and-you're-out for the first series," the Oakland Athletics owner said Wednesday. "It would be exciting. It would be great." Begun in 1995, the division series has been a best-of-five competition. Some people have advocated it be expanded to best-of-seven, matching the league championship series and the World Series. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has repeatedly said he favors the current format. Wolff said he hasn't brought up his concept with Selig. "No, I'm afraid to do that," he said. Under the current format, Game 7 of the World Series wouldn't be until Nov. 5 next year. Selig said during this year's World Series that the postseason has too many off days, but shortening it appears to be impossible if Major League Baseball sticks to having the World Series start on a Wednesday, a schedule that began in 2007.

Say what now??? This idea is stupid. I can understand a best-of-3 series, that might be somewhat of a better idea, but 1 game? No. Dumb idea.

So instead of losing in the playoffs in Game 5, they will lose in Game 1. Works perfectly, assuming they even get there.

Worst idea I've ever heard.

I'd rather they get rid of the first round than do that.

I'd like to see the regular season shortened a bit and the first round extended to best of 7, but if my choices are leaving things as is or shortening round 1 (even to best of 3) I'd rather keep it as is.

Sorry Leo but I am one of the "whiners" or as I like to call them "rational thinkers". November is not baseball weather, October barely is. MLB just needs to schedule double headers during the regular season and have flexible scheduling during the playoffs to simply cut down on the amount of off days . No games should be eliminated or added. A one game playoff goes to trying to compete with the NFL, just like November playoff games. It also takes away from the rare but exciting 163rd game. A one game playoff for the first round doesn't truly show who is the better team.

I think those are all brilliant suggestions, I'd love to go to a Doubleheader during the regular season, but sadly that cuts money so it won't happen

...So would a 1 game playoff. You'd only have 1 game instead of 3(plus a portion of the road games) to make gate $$ from....

I'd prefer baseball not played in November as well, but not at the expense of what this idiot is suggesting.

I'd rather baseball be played in "non-baseball weather" than to risk having a team knocked out in a 1 game playoff first round in a sport where a shitty 100 loss team can beat a great 100+ win team if they have one good game. (Not that a 100 loss team would be in the playoffs, but that's besides the point.)

I like the double header idea better than shortening the season, though.

Anything you do to prevent November baseball, short of starting baseball in mid-March, will reduce income, and if you start in Mid-March you're running the same weather related risks you are playing baseball in November.

They can schedule day-nighters where they wouldn't lose the tickets sold.
