...that the team who wins the opening game has won the World Series 63 of 103 times, including 10 of the last 11? If you didn't, it's true.

You're right, blah, blah, blah. That is for the media, not one player thinks about that shit.
2008 Giants > Padres
Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

You play to win the game.
Doesn't matter if it's the first game or the last game.
The TBSL Detroit Tigers.
The SBSL Montreal Expos. Back in the game.
The TPSL Boston Red Sox. 2012 AL East, 2013 WC Winners

Even so, that is a strange statistic. In a 7 game series, it seems game 1 would be kind of expendable, or at least a feel-the-other-team-out kinda game. I was surprised to find out that almost 2/3rds of the time the team that wins the first game wins the WS.

It's easier to win 3 out of the next 6 games than it is to win 4 out of the next 6 games. So, no, game 1 is not expendable.
Counting down to: The end of Andruw Jones's contract with the Dodgers:
n = [log (($17 million amount deferred x .02754 interest daily periodic rate)/30 days in cycle) - log ($5 million base x .02514 interest nominal periodic rate/162 games prorated in cycle)]/log (1+i)

None of the games are expendable, but being down 1-0 is hardly devastating.

The pitching tells the tale here. Hamels was "supposed" to win Game One. Its not like it was a blowout here. It was a good, hard fought game with it ending 3-2. Kazmir pitched well but not well enough. Rays still have the advantage despite being down 0-1.
