  • Paul Byrd - Despite the scarcity of available starting pitching, no team was willing to take on the remainder of Byrd's $7.5MM salary.
  • Greg Maddux - Maddux is earning $10MM this year and will only accept a trade to a West Coast team. The Dodgers wanted him but asked the Padres to pay more than 80% of his remaining salary according to Peter Gammons.
  • Duaner Sanchez - His velocity is down 3.6 mph from '06. Sanchez is under team control through '09.
  • Scott Schoeneweis - His strikeout rate is down, but so is his ERA. Apparently no team wanted to risk taking on his contract - $3.6MM this year, $3.6MM in '09.

*Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes of "rumblings that several teams had put in waiver claims on A's closer Huston Street." A's assistant GM David Forst wouldn't comment specifically, but it is believed the team is unlikely to move Street this month. The A's would have to receive prospects not on a team's 40-man roster, or else somehow convince the Royals, Indians, and Mariners not to claim their return package.

*Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Marlins claimed Brad Ausmus off waivers from the Astros. It's unclear whether they'll work out a deal or salary dump. Ausmus is owed another $590K this year.

*Craig Monroe has cleared waivers and become a free agent.

*Pirates players Chris Duffy and Franquelis Osoria cleared waivers and will head to Triple A.

Additionally:

-Jarrod Washburn: Was rumored to be dealt at the deadline, almost went to the Yankees, but interest has seemed to diminish lately. Could still be moved, Yankees may be VERY interested depending on THEIR opinion of Joba's injury.

Who do you guys think is most likely to be dealt?

So when Ned finally decides to make a solid pickup, the owner vetoes it for money reasons. Some fantastic management from top to bottom.

Counting down to: The end of Andruw Jones's contract with the Dodgers:
163 games
