According to The Palm Beach Post, the Yankees and Marlins have talked about a deal that would send Sheffield to the Marlins for RHP A.J. Burnett and OF Juan Encarnacion.

Old news. If it happens, it happens. But it won't.

I don't see why or how Burnett is on the market. The Marlins are still in this and they need Burnett's arm. Encarnacion can get some bullpen help but that is the only guy I could see being on the market. Pierre and Castillo have yet to really click so it is too early for trade talks about Burnett. Remember Burnett was not there for the 2003 WS. Why leave when you have a good shot at getting back to the playoffs?

2008 Giants > Padres

Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

I also didn't think Brad Penny would be traded last year even with his injury because he was one of their main arms. But the Marlins probably felt Penny wasn't worth a new contract and they were able to get a starting catcher, setup reliever, and a starting outfielder for Penny. The Marlins do need Burnett's arm more than Sheffield's bat with pitching a premium down the stretch and the playoffs.

Counting down to: The end of Andruw Jones's contract with the Dodgers:

n = [log (($17 million amount deferred x .02754 interest daily periodic rate)/30 days in cycle) - log ($5 million base x .02514 interest nominal periodic rate/162 games prorated in cycle)]/log (1+i)

I think Yankees should and would do this trade in a heartbeat. Not only would Burnett be a great arm to add to Yanks pitching staff, but Encarcion would not be that bad of a bat to have for the Yanks either. I would be very estatic if this deal went down.

Why would the Marlins dump Burnett unless he is a FA waiting to happen?

I would do it in a heartbeat if I was Cashman. The only thing I would demand is an extension from Burnett. I would hate to lose Sheff but could not pass up getting AJ.

I think the Marlins could resign him, General. I think they should anyway. Marlins should start signing their guys instead of giving them away to other teams like most small-market teams out there.

I think they should as well, but I really don't believe that will be the case. They've spent a lot this offseason, and Florida isn't exactly big-market.

I think the yankees couldn't live without an asshole on the team, if they dealt Sheffy. I think they should move him for Kenny Rogers. And while they're at it, try and get Kenny Rogers the singer too.

Burnett is better than Beckett and I will fight anyone to the death if they disagree. This deal would be terrible for the Marlins. Spend some money and resign him.

If Burnett reaches free agency, don't look for him coming back. Some teams have a lot of money and they would be able to give Burnett a lot of cash. Teams such as Yanks and even Tigers. They should trade him and try to get atleast something for him.
