ESPN - 9-year-old boy told he's too good to pitch - ESPN

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player -- too good, it turns out.

The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.
and

He's never hurt any one," Vidro said. "He's on target all the time. How can you punish a kid for being too good?"

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

"I feel sad," he said. "I feel like it's all my fault nobody could play."
wow...just ridiculous. more of the "everyone has to win", "no one is a loser", and "no one gets out" type BS. He can't pitch because he's too good? Are we communist or something?

Seriously, I remember some of my friends trying to tell me I had to pitch slower when we played some backyard ball with a tennis ball before joining any leagues. This kind of reminded me of that.

I read about this earlier. It's SO stupid. You're punishing a kid because he has too much skill? Next thing you know, fast kids won't be allowed to play tag.

Hot girls aren't allowed to have boyfriends, Smart people can't go to college, what next? It's a ridiculous proposition. Stop the child coddling, and teach them that losing is a part of life...

That works too. But still, losing happens. If they don't learn that early, they will never get any better, because they won't know that there's anything wrong with them...

no no no, no one loses...didn't you see that yet? no one is going to keep score anymore. I heard the NFL is adopting that rule for this season. Everyone will be 18 - 0 and a Superbowl champ! yeah!!!

I know no one loses, but they SHOULD. It's stupid how kids never learn to deal with failure....eventually, they'll find out, so you might as well ease them in to it early.

This isn't about failure, it's about the kid being too good. It's one kid in a 9-year old league, this whole thing is an absolute joke and whoever made this decision should be fired.

Because he tops out at 40 mph?

I topped out at 45 mph when I was 10 and they had no problem letting me pitch.

Exactly Kev, they aren't letting him pitch. Not because he's too good, per se, but because the parents of other kids can't handle their kids having to struggle. The parents complained that the kid was too skilled. How about teaching your kids that sometimes life is going to be hard, you're gonna fail, but you have to keep trying and get better. Just because your kid can't hit this pitcher doesn't mean you should ban him...

When my little league coach first started trying out other people to pitch during practice the first batter I got to face was his son.

I struck him out looking on three straight pitches.

The coach just said "we've got a new pitcher"
