Reliever Keith Foulke, on the mound when Boston ended its 86-year World Series drought, retired Friday just as he was about to begin competing for a closer's job with the Cleveland Indians.

That's a pretty respectable thing to do there by Mr. Foulke. Unlike some players who would try to get every last penny and inning pitched that they could, he must of thought for him to pitch with his health status that it would just be unfair to the club and to himself. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised though if we hear of him attempting a comeback later.

Foulke could be a real jerk...but he'll always have a place in my heart for the 2004 WS run and the absolute stud he was in the post-season

I wouldn't be surprised to see him trying to comeback in the future. He is only 34 I think so he still have plenty of time to get healthy and pitch some more, and he certainly did pitch throughout his career. A pair of 40 save seasons and posting ERA's between 2.08 and 2.97 from '99 through '04. Too bad he had to have all these injury problems.

It is too bad, I liked Foulke! I don't to see athletes have to retire when it is due to injury. I know it is for the best, but I still don't have to like it!

I know what you mean. I absolutely hated it when John Wetteland retired because of back problems. His performance was suffering but I still loved the guy. The greatest closer in Ranger history and dominating throughout his career. And what I hated almost as much was the John Rocker/Hideki Irabu closing tandem that replaced him the following year. hah

Jeff Zimmerman replaced John Wetteland after Wetteland retired.

Thanks, I had my years mixed up. 2002 was the Rocker/Irabu experiment because Zimmerman was hurt.
