$380,000 1 year deal.

Not a bad signing for that low, and all

So much for Brian Lawrence?

Well anyone could have had Ortiz for that low since the Dbacks are still paying his salary. This is the amount they don't owe. But it's still a bad signing

2008 Giants > Padres

Pathetic Stat of the Year- Matt Cain has a 3.74 career ERA, but has won just 30 of his 104 starts.

I dont know Reef, because I think Ortiz was in a similar situation as R-Johnson IMO, Johnson struggles when he left AZ, Ortiz struggles when he left SF, so he could turn it arround, he could not, but the reward is greater than the risk.

Russ Ortiz has that obscure pitching motion where he appears to stop his hand in the middle of throwing it, and then tosses it.

I'd smak talk it, but Chris Young appears to do the same thing.

Keith Foulke stops right before he throws it to where it almost looks like a golf ball sitting on a tee and then slings it. So I agree DK, pretty bad motion although it worked for him for a while.

"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

In todays market the signing of Ortiz was a very good move the cost the Giants very little what some good upside. If it works out it could be a great move, if it does not so what.

Russ Ortiz wasn't good in San Francisco. Or anywhere. He sucks.

I he can bounce back to the Pitcher he was when he was a Giant that is a good signing.

He is REAL cheap insurance in any case.

Lawrence will probably end up signing a minor league contract with the Padres.

He averaged over 210 innings and 16 wins in 4 full seasons as a starter in SF. That is good ANYWHERE!

He only had two BAD years, 2005 when he was injured and 2006 when he was used mostly in relief.

Get a clue man.

And now he goes back to a division, the NL West, with 3 of the best pitchers parks in MLB.

Its called "PUSHING" the ball or short arming it.

If you have good movement on your pitches and change speed well it doesn't matter al that much.

If, on the other hand, you throw a fastball in the 80's and your off speed pitch is not much slower then you get killed.

Ortiz used to have a mid 90's fastball before he got hurt in 2005. If he regains some velocity playing in that huge park in SF(and SD and LA) he wil be just fine.

Are they hoping for a repeat perfomance from the first stint? I personally think he is done, but pitching in pticher friendly San Fran. He may be a nice #5!
