Conine Signs One Day Contract

Florida fan favorite Jeff Conine will go out as a Marlin, according to MLB.com Nicknamed "Mr. Marlin," Conine will sign a one-day contract on March 28 when the Marlins face the New York Yankees in an exhibition game at Dolphin Stadium, then retire. Conine, 41, was an original member of the team's inaugural roster and had two stints with the organization. As a first baseman and outfielder, Conine played a key role in the team's 1997 and 2003 World Series titles. According to MLB.com, the Marlins also plan to honor Conine in an on-field ceremony in their season opener against the New York Mets on March 31. Conine had a 17-year career in the majors, starting with the Kansas City Royals in 1990. He also played for the Marlins, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds and Mets. Conine compiled a .285 career batting average with 214 home runs and 1,071 RBIs. He is the Marlins leader in career grand slams with six, and he's second in team history in total hits (1,005), singles (688), RBIs (553), total bases (1,579) and games played (1,014).

Conine is the Florida Marlins. He is who I think of first when you say anything about the Marlins. He was on both championship teams and just one of those guys you loved to root for. This is a great thing the Marlins are doing and more importantly he isn't expected to play and take up anyone's AB A class act for the Marlins when they haven't had one in forever.
