The Miami Herald reports that "the Marlins are in discussions" with Luis Gonzalez.

The newspaper suggests that Gonzalez would serve as a backup for Josh Willingham and Mike Jacobs, but that hardly seems worthwhile for the Marlins or Gonzalez. Gonzalez's agent said Thursday that his client would be a good fit in Florida because he "enjoys being a mentor to young players," which is quite a spin given that Gonzalez publicly criticized various Dodgers youngsters last season.
Bad move for both teams right here. Gonzo wants to play everyday and that can't happen with the Marlins. Marlins obviously don't want to pay for players so why go after Gonzo? Marlins should be looking at guys like Steve Finley if they are looking for inexpensive veteran leaders who can play OF and help the young guys out. Gonzo should be looking to DH somewhere like Oakland or Minnesota.

Look for Gonzo to blame Hanley Ramirez for the Marlins' 4th place in the standings while Gonzo's on-base plus slugging percentage for the month is at .600.

Counting down to: The end of Andruw Jones's contract with the Dodgers:

n = [log (($17 million amount deferred x .02754 interest daily periodic rate)/30 days in cycle) - log ($5 million base x .02514 interest nominal periodic rate/162 games prorated in cycle)]/log (1+i)

Free agent Luis Gonzalez turned down a one-year offer from the Marlins worth about $2 million, according to the Boston Herald.
There are better options for Florida out there anyway. If they're going to sign someone who might cut into Josh Willingham's playing time, they need to at least make sure he's a superior defender.
Even at $2 mil, he wouldn't have been the highest paid player on the team!! Steve Finley would go for that money.
