CARDINALS 4, MARLINS 1
at Jupiter, Fla.
Friday, March 9

Marlins at the plate: Jason Wood went deep for Florida, a solo shot in the third. Aaron Boone cracked a leadoff double in the fifth, and Joe Borchard did the same in the seventh, but both were stranded.

Cardinals at the plate: Albert Pujols smacked a pair of RBI doubles in three at-bats. Ryan Ludwick singled twice, and Yadier Molina added an RBI double.

Marlins on the mound: Starter Scott Olsen actually took a small step forward, though he still wasn't at his best, allowing two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Closing candidate Matt Lindstrom pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings of relief.

Cardinals on the mound: Anthony Reyes gave his most impressive performance of the spring. He allowed a solo homer but no other baserunners in 3 2/3 innings, striking out four batters. Brad Thompson, still trying to stake a claim to a rotation spot, was solid as well with 3 1/3 two-hit, shutout innings.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 2-8; Cardinals 6-3.

Up next: Florida has a split-squad day with the Dodgers on Saturday. Starting in Vero Beach will be Chris Volstad for Florida and Jason Schmidt for Los Angeles. In Jupiter, it will be the Marlins' Ricky Nolasco and the Dodgers' Mark Hendrickson. The Cardinals travel south to Fort Lauderdale to play Baltimore. Adam Wainwright will start against Adam Loewen. All three games start at 1:05 p.m. ET.

"For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
