MARLINS 2, DODGERS 1
at Vero Beach, Fla.
Thursday, March 8

Dodgers at the plate: Nomar Garciaparra slugged his first spring home run in the first inning. The Dodgers had only four hits.

Marlins at the plate: Miguel Cabrera had a bases-loaded two-run single in the decisive sixth inning and went 3-for-3.

Dodgers on the mound: Starter Derek Lowe allowed one single in three innings, striking out four. Brett Tomko followed with two scoreless innings, but Joe Mays allowed two runs on a walk and three consecutive singles. Joe Beimel made his first appearance after complaining of mild elbow discomfort and pitched a perfect ninth.

Marlins on the mound: Anibal Sanchez pitched three innings, allowing only Garciaparra's home run. Henry Owens followed with two scoreless innings. Mike Koplove pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Grapefruit League records: Dodgers 5-5, Marlins 2-7-1.

Up next: While Randy Wolf starts for the Dodgers Friday against Minnesota at Vero Beach, Chad Billingsley will follow with three innings as he continues his quest for the fifth-starter spot. Billingsley hasn't allowed an earned run in four innings over two outings. The Marlins play a road game against their Roger Dean Stadium co-tenants, the St. Louis Cardinals, on Friday at 1:05 p.m ET. Florida southpaw Scott Olsen starts against Cards right-hander Anthony Reyes. Also scheduled to pitch for the Marlins are Renyel Pinto, Matt Lindstrom and Felix Rodriguez.

"For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
