RED SOX 14, MARLINS 6, 10 innings
at Jupiter, Fla.
Tuesday, March 6

Marlins at the plate: Alejandro De Aza delivered a two-out RBI double in the ninth inning, forcing extra innings. Robert Andino added a two-run double in the three-run ninth. Hanley Ramirez blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning, putting the Marlins ahead, 2-1. Ramirez was robbed of a single in the third inning when his hard liner was snared by Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Dan Uggla made himself part of a trivia question by singling in the first inning off Matsuzaka. Uggla is the first Major League batter to get a hit off the Japanese sensation. John Gall delivered a ground-rule double in the second inning, putting runners at second and third, but the Marlins were unable to score. Brett Carroll had an RBI single in the eighth inning, scoring De Aza, who doubled.

Red Sox at the plate: In the 10th inning, the Red Sox poured on eight runs. Brandon Moss had an RBI double, Jeff Bailey had a two-run double, while Joe McEwing, Jacoby Ellsbury and Bobby Scales each had RBI singles. The Red Sox rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead on Moss' RBI single. Kerry Robinson doubled and Ed Rogers singled in the inning. In the eighth inning, Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases full, pushing across the fourth run. Dustin Pedroia's infield single scored Jason Varitek from second base with two outs in the fourth inning, giving Boston a 1-0 lead. Varitek walked and went to second on Eric Hinske's single to left. Robinson provided the Red Sox's first hit, reaching on an infield single to short with two outs in the third inning. In a two-run ninth, McEwing and Chad Spann each had RBI singles.

Marlins on the mound: Yusmeiro Petit, competing for the fifth rotation spot now that Josh Johnson is out at least two months with an ulnar nerve problem, turned in a stellar three-inning performance. Petit issued one hit, no walks and struck out five. Wes Obermueller was touched for a run in the fourth inning, yielding two hits and a walk. Felix Rodriguez was touched for two runs in the seventh inning.

Red Sox on the mound: Matsuzaka threw 15 pitches in the first inning, with 11 strikes. In the second inning, the Japanese right-hander tossed 21 pitches, with 13 strikes, and stranded runners on second and third with one out. His fastball topped out at 93 mph in the second inning, and his lowest off-speed pitch was clocked at 71 mph. In his third and final inning, Matsuzaka retired the side in order on 11 pitches, with seven strikes. He threw 47 pitches with 31 strikes. According to speed gun readings, Matsuzaka's fastball touched 91-93 mph in the third inning. His curveball ranged from 74-77 mph, while his slider was 81-82 mph, and his changeup was 76-78 mph. Joel Pineiro tossed a scoreless fourth. Manny Delcarmen surrendered the homer to Ramirez.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 1-6; Red Sox 2-4.

Up next: On Wednesday, the Marlins have a split-squad day, with Dontrelle Willis pitching the 1:05 p.m. ET contest against the Orioles, who are going with Erik Bedard. In the 7:05 p.m. contest, Gaby Hernandez makes his second spring start against Eric Stults, who will go for the Dodgers. Both games are at Roger Dean Stadium.

"For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
