CARDINALS 6, MARLINS 3
at Jupiter, Fla.
Wednesday, Feb. 28

Marlins at the plate: Alejandro De Aza broke up the Cards' no-hit bid with a bunt single in the fifth. Robert Andino got the Fish on the board with an RBI forceout in the sixth, driving in Eric Reed, who had singled.

Cardinals at the plate: Rick Ankiel came off the bench for two hits, including a two-run single that keyed a four-run seventh as the Cards broke things open. Chris Duncan singled twice and Skip Schumaker rapped an RBI single.

Marlins on the mound: Starter Scott Olsen needed 37 pitches to go 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits but minimizing the damage from a couple of jams. Ricky Nolasco pitched two shutout frames with one hit.

Cardinals on the mound: Starter Adam Wainwright breezed through three scoreless, hitless innings, permitting one walk and striking out one. He needed only 30 pitches. Mike Smith turned in two shutout frames, and Brian Falkenborg pitched a perfect seventh of all ground balls.

Grapefruit League records: Marlins 0-1; Cardinals 1-0.

Up next: The Cardinals travel north to Port St. Lucie to face the Mets. In a preview of their Opening Day matchup, Chris Carpenter will go against Tom Glavine. Florida will be the home team at Roger Dean Stadium against the Orioles. The Marlins send Wes Obermueller to the mound against Steve Trachsel.

"For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
