Backup catcher rips Marlins fan support

August 26, 2006

MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor was skeptical about the announced attendance of 30,017 for Saturday's game against Milwaukee.

"That means there were 15,000," Treanor said.

The Marlins rank last in the major leagues in attendance, and their actual crowds are often much smaller than the announced figure, which is based on tickets sold.

"People in South Florida should be ashamed of themselves," Treanor said. "It would be good to see some support for these guys."

The Marlins won their sixth consecutive game Saturday and trail NL wild-card leader Cincinnati by only four games. But average home attendance is only 13,514, and Florida will likely struggle to reach the one-million mark by the end of the season.

Treanor noted that fans who do attend games often root for the visiting team, especially when the opponent is from New York.

"That irks me a little bit, too," he said.

What can you say? Miami folks love their Yankees.

Counting down to: The end of Andruw Jones's contract with the Dodgers:

n = [log (($17 million amount deferred x .02754 interest daily periodic rate)/30 days in cycle) - log ($5 million base x .02514 interest nominal periodic rate/162 games prorated in cycle)]/log (1+i)

If they had Treanor's wife playing in the outfield, that might get a rise in the attendance.

Come on out, oh the weather outside is weather...
