Fuentes, Taveras Could Be Traded -
08-26-2008, 06:18 PM
According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Rockies have placed both Brian Fuentes and Willy Taveras on revocable waivers.
Fuentes has the better chance to be traded, and the Dodgers are the contender with the first crack at him. However, it's possible that a non-contender could claim him anyway. He's owed just $1 million over the rest of this season and he's nearly certain to bring back two draft picks as a free agent this winter, so why shouldn't the Padres put in a claim? Taveras, who is under control through 2010, is more likely to be dealt this winter.
|
Dodgers definitely need Fuentes in their bullpen. Saito isn't being counted on to return this season and Broxton has been awful. If the Padres don't claim him, I sure hope the Giants do as they are more desperate for relief help.
Taveras can help a team like the Marlins. Marlins could use more speed and better defense and Willy provides both. Does anyone even realize that Taveras has 61 stolen bases?!? He could help a lot of teams but I think the Marlins would be the best fit.

Taveras is very very fast...but his OBP is only around .315 I think. Not the best choice for a leadoff hitter, but he plays solid d, has a pretty good arm, and is a monster at stealing bases.
***Edit***
His OBP is .316

Maybe if Abercrombie still played for the Marlins but he doesn't.

He actually did play for them shortly...
And I can keep dreaming that the Mets will add Fuentes, right? I mean, why would SF or SD add a guy who is a FA after this year and has made clear he only wants to be a closer?

The Giants would add him to make their bullpen stronger. Padres could add him to fill Hoffman's spot should they not retain his services. Both teams would have first shot to sign Fuentes.

Yeah, but he's made it clear he won't resign unless he's going to have the closers role. SD might be a fit, but SF wouldn't really. I mean, they could take Wilson out of that spot, but would it be worth it?

Wilson leads the NL in Saves but also has an ERA over 4. He has only blown three saves though. Giants can always overpay for him to be a setup man or have an open competition. Fuentes and Valdez setting up WIlson would look good. Wilson going to the setup role could be good as well. Fuentes is the better reliever of the two.

Agreed, but will they pay Wilson closer money to be a setup man?
