Larry Walker, hall of famer? -
05-03-2008, 04:41 AM
ManRam was easy yes, but let's go with a curve ball.
And yes, this could have easily gone in the Montreal Expos forum, oh wait, woops, ...nevermind.
Key stats:
2160 hits
383 homeruns
.313 average
.400 OBP
230 steals
471 doubles
1997 MVP
7 time Gold Glover
3 time Silver Slugger
The bad:
The 1994 strike ruined what was a monster year.
Frequently injured, to the point it's not out of the picture he could have hit close to 500 homeruns.
In fact, he played 150 games just.. once, thusly was routinely under 500 at bats. Once again, fair to say he could have been in the 500 HR club. Also, fewer injuries would haven meant less stress on his body, perhaps he plays longer or at the very least, has a tremendous tenure with the cardinals. Injuries also killed his base stealing, he was very efficient man with steals.
Come on out, oh the weather outside is weather...

But the fact is, he WAS injured often, and therefore did not reach 500. Unfortunately for Larry Walker, the writers have to take what they are given for the HoF, and not what could have been. They can't speculate, they can only go by what actually happened. And what actually happened is exactly what you said, he only played 150 games once, and did not reach 500 HR by a long shot. Larry Walker is not in the HoF to me, although he was a great player no doubt.

I agree with giantsfan5689. He was too injured too often and did not reach his ultimate potential as a player. He no doubt was a damn good player, but I think he will be one of those players that will get votes and hang on the ballot for a few years, but never reach the amount needed.

Yes... He hit .317. Not to mention the MVP, the Gold Gloves...he'll get in, but it'll have to be a down year

A .313 lifetime BA is hardly enough to make you hall worthy, neither is one MVP and a few gold gloves.
Otherwise Ken Caminiti's a hall of famer as well.

Unfortunately no. He was a terrific player (even despite the time he gave a fan the ball after the 2nd out), but he just doesn't have the statistical dominance to be in the hall of fame.

Good player. Had many tools for the game, but he just did NOT stay healthy enough.

I do think he would have been a HOFer had he stayed healthy, but the fact is he didn't.

My gut reaction was No. As much as I loved Larry Walker, I just don't know if he should be considered a HOFer.
He was awesome when healthy, but that wasn't often enough. Still, I hate to see a player who had injury issues be denied based on injuries.
I'm undecided.
