The Official Site of Major League Baseball: Gameday

I was reading over stats versus the opposing team, and it made me ponder this question: If teams don't play often, do you put stock in how players perform against those opposing teams?

No.

For example, maybe Jay Payton's hitting .600 against Seattle. That doesn't mean he's hitting .600 against Felix Hernandez or Erik Bedard, could be against Horacio Ramirez.

True.

But certain players play well in certain parks. Couldn't it be that some players just hit better in Camden or Safeco?

It's possible, but I wouldn't as much stock into batter at ballpark matchups as batter vs pitcher matchups. It could be that some players play better against certain teams, but ultimately it comes down to pitcher vs hitter.

I agree to an extent...

but lefties hit better in the Stadium, righties hit better in Minute Maid/Enron (**** it, that's its name), so I really think stats in stadiums are underrated.

I agree with you there, but in general I don't think they're an enormous deal...I mean, in general lefties are going to do better at the Stadium. Not just a few hitters here and there.

Valid.

No one else seems to care.

We're in essential agreement too.

Also with FA, teams are not always the same... so performance by team, in any year but the current, means diddly squat... batter .vs pitcher performance INDIVIDUALLY can lead you to some conclusions and probability, but I do not buy into this ".vs team" historical crapola

As for ballpark... I think familiarity gains advantage... and a left field porch 30 feet shorter than average (for example) could make a difference to righty batters... but I do not put a huge amount into 'this park is great for this player'... I fully believe some parks have their advantages and disadvantages, but not that they are very partisan to particular players... moreso to TYPES of players
